Week 3 & 4 — Real-Life Independence / Personal Care

Washing Hair — Personal Care ADL

Bilateral ADL
Personal Care
Independence

Overhead, sustained, bilateral, and unavoidably daily. Hair washing is one of the clearest tests that gains have reached real life.

Coaching cues

  • Practise the pattern dry before adding water and soap.
  • Allow the elbow to rest on the head — that support is a legitimate strategy.
  • Fade your help from hand, to elbow, to verbal cue only.

Key takeaways

  • Personal-care wins matter more to families than any measurement.
  • Endurance in an overhead position is the limiting factor — train it directly.

Week 4 — Advanced Motor Control & Bilateral Integration

Climbing the Rock Wall

Bilateral Integration
Advanced Motor Control
Weight-Bearing

Climbing forces sustained grasp, alternating bilateral reach, and full-body motor planning with the child fully invested in the outcome.

Coaching cues

  • Plan the route so the affected hand has to take real holds.
  • Spot at the hips so the arms keep doing the work.
  • Short climbs, full effort, genuine rest.

Key takeaways

  • Play at this level integrates everything from Weeks 1–3.
  • Motivation is the strongest dosing tool you have.
